DO NOT loose your US passport in Venice. There is no emergency passport service here. You will have to go to Rome, Milan, Florence or Naples. For non-passport emergencies call the 24 hour emergency hotline: 02-290-351. There is a consular office at Marco Polo airport. This is my regular reminder to check your passport expiration date. Americans should register with the State Department STEP program before their trip. Information for UK nationals (check your passport dates!) and Australians.
