Italian summer fun, a groovy show about eyeglasses in Venice + a peek downstairs in my Venice house

What a difference a year makes. 365-ish days ago my house was a construction site. The cement had barely dried on the newly laid floor and I didn’t have stairs! The house is so close to finished now. Pictures (thank you Mark) and curtains (thank you to my neighbor Laura) are hung and we have stairs! (are the railings completely how I want them? is the kitchen marble installed? Not quite yet.)
I just spent a week in Ponza celebrating San Silverio, the island’s patron saint, with pals from Rome and Massachusetts, eating boat pasta, and swimming in that dreamy water. (This post by
is a super interesting read about the color of the Atlantic.) Now I am in Rome for a few (hot) days doing quotidian things like getting my nails done and being home so that the technician can come to make sure my friend’s caldaia (hot water heater) is working properly. We will go to our favorite beach club tomorrow and might even go see a movie! We head back to Venice just in time for our neighborhood festival. Hopefully that big wedding that’s coming to town won’t be a nuisance.Paid subscribers to my newsletter have access to three years worth of my personal lists of great things to do and see and eat in Rome and Venice and Florence plus dozens of annotated maps. You also get access to the comments section where you can ask me anything about travel or living in Italy. And this month at the very end of the newsletter you can see some unedited pictures of the house.
