While the rest of the country is in full Rientro mode most of the month of September is my August. It is still summer until the end of today after all. (Happy Equinox!) Noah and Dani are usually in Italy with us until mid-September so we stretch the last long warm days on boats in Ponza, with late morning spritz biancos near Rialto, afternoon naps at the beach and late dinners with pals in Rome. By the time we put them on the boat that sails away to the airport I am (almost) ready for more structured days.

The end of summer used to fill me with anxiety, fretting about the cold dark days that were coming. About 15 or so years ago I somehow stopped focusing on what I didn’t like (good thing because there is pretty much nothing you can do about it, save switching hemispheres. A strategy I deployed for many years) and focused on what there was to look forward to. I love the silent foggy days in mid-winter and puttering in the kitchen making soup. I am almost tired of all of my light colorful summer dresses and am thinking about which high shelf I stashed the zippered cotton container filled with freshly washed cashmere sweaters. I just dropped off a long heavy stole that has a string of holes from an unfortunate encounter with a suitcase zipper with someone who will repair each ragged space with colored silk thread and pieces of jacquard cloth. I am planning day trips to hot springs and drives over mountain passes.

What are you doing in this seasonal transition? If Italy is in your fall or winter plans and you need some ideas of where to go or what to do I can help! Ask me a quick question in the comments or set up a call for more detailed and personal itinerary planning.

My boy has a new album. You can listen to it here.
