Gillian Knows Best guide: Gelato in Venice
๐ฆ7 addresses for cups and cones + the only in Venice frozen treat
Last month I shared my favorite gelato places in Rome. Today I will tell you about where I go for gelato in Venice.
Gelato might be the only thing that Venetians eat while walking. Only Gelateria Nico and Gelateria da Tita have tables and places to sit. Otherwise stroll along a Fondamenta or find a red bench in a campo or stone bench along the water. Donโt sit on bridges or church steps or store and window ledges. Donโt bring your gelato onto the vaporetto.
Gianduiotto Veneziano is a rectangle of chocolate hazelnut gelato plunged into a cup filled with whipped cream. There are two places on opposite sides of Venice that I go to for this rich restorative treat. Baccaro Gelato in Canareggio and Gelateria Nico on the Zattere.
Gelateria Nico: This cafe on the long and wide Fondamenta delle Zattere beside the Giudecca canal is a classic. The gelato here comes in tall glass fluted cups with whipped cream and flourish. For many Venetians getting Gianduiotto here is a nostalgic childhood memory. The sunset viewing here is ace. Donโt feel like gelato? Get a spritz or draft beer or coffee instead.
Baccaro Gelato: This is the gelato that I walk for 45 minutes for. I almost always get the Cremino al pistacchio, dark chocolate gelato that is blanketed with a layer of pistachio creme. If you are a Reeseโs fan, this is the Italian version. Their gianduiotto is also ridiculously delicious.
