Ask me Anything January 2023 Edition
A must see exhibit about rescued masterpieces in Rome + A delicious Japanese meal in Venice
How is your 2023 going so far? (Also, isn’t January usually the slow month?) We rang in the new year here in Rome together with family and friends and then on January 1 we all went to our favorite beach club. The sunshine was glorious (and also a tad concerning) and lunch was delicious. We took a long walk and watched the sunset with our (cold) bare feet in the Tyrrhenian sea. It was perfect in every way. We also took a quick trip to Venice this month. The plan was to celebrate a Venetian Epiphany festival called pan e vin with pals on the island of San’Erasmo. A big part of the celebrations is a bonfire but the air quality in the region was deemed so bad that all private bonfires were forbidden. We still had a good time eating epiphany fritelle and wandering with occasional stops for art and glasses of natural wine and plates of cichetti.
And now reality is finally setting in. We only have a few more weeks here in our lovely Monti apartment. We finally fixed a date for the movers to come and some boxes have already been dropped off. The next few months are very, uh, fluid? It will definitely be an exercise in impermanence and flexibility. We haven’t found an apartment we love in Venice yet but we have learned a lot in the past few months of actively looking. We will bounce between Rome and Venice and if our questura immigration appointment goes well, there will be a quick trip to the US in there somewhere.
