Hi Gillian, I've been to Venice many times over the course of 5 decades, but never around Xmas or New Years and I am now thinking I'd like to spend a day there 1st week of January, perhaps 2nd or 3rd- would the cichetti places be open or do places shut down after new years of a few days? I am thinking that going before end of the year would mean more tourists- I would just go for a day trip from Ljubljana, while I am there on holidays
I love this. I was thinking about what my perfect day would be, and basically just being in Venice would already be my perfect day! But I think a morning wandering, then maybe lunch on Giudecca, then a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim, and finally dinner at Osteria alle Testiere would fit the bill. Or cicchetti for lunch and the opera in the evening? HOW DO YOU EVEN CHOOSE??
And a very belated thank you for the excellent reference for a Venetian guide this summer-- Luisella gave a wonderful tour of Dorsoduro. Your posts only make me long to return!
Gillian, I’ve never been to Venice, but this made me want my very first trip to be in quiet January fog, following this day step for step — caigo, long walks, museums, spritz, and a too-long lunch.

Hello! It will be quieter, but still holidays here. Things really slow down after the 6th
Thanks! I will be back in Lisbon on the 6th, so it would have to be before that.
Sounds like a beautiful day! Have you experienced that day or is it a combination of your favorite individual experiences?
It can happen if a cold Bora wind blows in and sweeps away the fog!
I would enjoy a day like this.
We couldn't agree more, Gillian

What a perfect itinerary. That’s why you need more the one day!
Venice is magic.
This was a delight! Thank you.
🤩
Saving this for my February trip!
I hope you get a foggy Venice!
Thank you for a moment inside a dreamy day in the dreamiest of cities!
My pleasure!

I am so happy to hear that!
I saw that bar photo and thought, “That looks like Rizziardelli!”
Thank goodness those krapfen are far away from my house 😂
Oh yes. Definitely serve me up one of these days.
They are the best days!

Saving this for whenever I finally get there.

Venice & I will be waiting for you!
A perfect day.
I’m working on a late spring version 😉
