The first months of my 2025 unfurled slowly. Until this month I did not travel further than across the lagoon over to the Lido for lunch and to Verona for a few hours. Just as advertised March came in like a lion. I spent the first weeks of the month in Tennessee visiting family, eating BBQ and pepperoni pizza and in spite of the freezing temperatures and leaden skies drinking gallons of ice water and sweet tea. The handful of days I was at home in Venice were full of houseguests and lots of visitors. I am closing out the month in Rome where I am getting my fill of sunshine, cicoria and good coffee.

Spring is on its way in Venice. The surest sign that winter is over is when I can no longer use my downstairs courtyard as a refrigerator. My next house project1 is to make my two tiny outside spaces less full of construction debris and more full of flowers. It is almost time to go to the garden center and choose some plants that 1) I can keep alive 2) will block the view of the window of the house next door that is so close to my upstairs terrace I can almost touch it.

Paid subscribers to this newsletter have access to dozens of annotated maps and 3 years worth of my lists. You also get access to my comments where you ask me anything. This is your chance to ask about visiting Rome during the Jubilee or my advice for visiting Burano.
