I do love a superlative. I will boldly declare something (my lunch, a view, a painting) is amazing or incredible or sensational. I mean come on, the name of this newsletter is Gillian Knows BEST.1 Some things really are amazing. Like once in a lifetime amazing. Some of the most incredible moments I have had in Italy can probably not be repeated, like the time I spent in the Colosseum just after lockdown was lifted when the only other person I saw was a guard. Or the morning when I lay down on the floor of the Sistine chapel just as dawn broke2.

There are so many special experiences in Italy that are accessible to mere mortals. If you know who to ask. Just like that scene in one of my favorite films set in Rome.
