My husband is from Vicenza and we go about 3 times a year (we live in England), now with our 3 boys in tow. I love the Basilica: the piazza is just stunning. We have wedding photos taken there and so many happy memories. It is definitely worth at least a day trip for anyone visiting Veneto (just not too many of you at a time - the relatively small number of tourists is part of what makes it so special!).
I was just in Vincenza last week, and I'm still kicking myself because I went on Monday, when everything was closed. I would particularly have loved to see Villa La Rotunda. But what a lovely, elegant town! You can feel Palladio's classical influence everywhere...
Thank you Gillian. We lived about 15 km from Bassano and in my drinking days I made sure to drink copious amounts of cherry grappa whenever crossing the rebuilt covered bridge. Great detail in your post. So grateful.
I read your posts with mixed feelings. You conjure up a deep longing to immediately visit, experience, eat and buy wonderful things - but they are far away and (at the moment) inaccessible. I still read, and I get over the longing, but one day I will revisit Venice and take all your suggestions with me.
Such a wealth of information in this post, Gillian! Years ago, we toured around the Veneto with the kids. Rather than stay in Venice, we stayed at a villa in the countryside, part of which the owners had turned into small apartments for renting to help finance upkeep (this was before Air B & B). We took the train into Venice a couple of times, but for the rest of the trip we drove around the region. Vicenza, Bassano, and Villa Rotonda were such lovely surprises. Your descriptions really bring back those memories and a a desire to return.
Thank you. It is a wonderful way to explore the region. They are all so interconnected, being able to visit both places really deepens the understanding.
I'm from Vicenza, you did a very nice tour! It is a nice feeling read about your city from a traveller point of view! Thank you!
That’s is the nicest thing to say. Thank you 🙏 I am looking forward to learning so much more about the Veneto.
To visit the Palladian villas is an old childhood dream of mine! Thank you for this guide. One day...
They really are amazing

Lucky you to have an insider guide. It really is a special place. Even better if you spend a few days!
Gillian, lovely post but Is there a typo in your title?
fixed!
Another lovely list Gillian, and of course I've been wanting to visit Tassoti for ages to buy all the paper!
Thank you! Thankfully we were in a hurry so I didn’t have time to clean the place out 😉

It is such a lovely town. I am already planning a return trip.
A shot of grappa is required before crossing the bridge as I recall. Then again I could be mistaken as I no longer drink for a reason.
Marostica to the west is a cherry producing area.

I have never tried cherry grappa. It sounds like I need another trip across the bridge!

I do hope that you can visit soon, and in the meantime, thank you so much for reading.
Oh wow, I love this! (I also love the red wines from Colli Berici!)
Thank you! I have so much to learn about up here.
