Lovely photos and words, this transports me right back to Venice! Have you been to Row Venice? I loved it; maybe it’s touristy, I don’t know, but I loved getting to row out on the water and be a gondolier for a few hours.
Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear when people say my works transports them 🥰I have met Jane a few times & am always recommending it, but I haven’t gone yet. It looks super fun.
I love this list, the sacher torte from Rosa Salva is amazing and that Mantovano fresco in Palazzo Grimani is one of my all time favourite frescoes anywhere (by the way, I realise it must be a typo, should be 1560s!). And thank you for introducing me to spolia. I don't know how I did not know the word for this! Adoro!
Venice has admittedly never been high on the list of places I'd like to visit in Italy, but this article brings it down to a scale where I think I can begin to appreciate it. Great post and lovely photos.
That is wonderful to hear! Venice is difficult. I get why people are overwhelmed or have had a less than ideal time here. I love a challenge & am on a mission to convert the doubters 😉
I'm generally pretty set in my ideas, but when it comes to travel, I'm happy to be converted 😂 I don't want to miss out on good things for bad reasons. Looking forward to learning more about Venice!
It is always worthwhile looking up, but in Italy it seems the best decoration is always on the ceiling. Did people recline all day and just gaze at the ceilings? Thank you for posting your Venice top 10. It makes me want to visit again immediately.
Very inspiring! We're actually in the process of buying a house in Italy as well, at the moment. Thanks for all the insights!
Congratulations! I hope your house buying is going smoother than ours.

Don't be, it happens! Shows this list was thoughtfully written by a human ;)
Love this! Kicking myself for missing the taxidermy owl when I went, though.
It just means you have to come back!
Currently craving that cake. And I’m so with you on apricot jam.
You make Venice look so fabulous and so human scaled.
There are just so many
more delicious jams, right?! I hope I can show you around Venice one day
It is guaranteed to happen. Venice through your eyes is the best.

I am terribly embarrassed by that typo 🤦♀️
Your newsletters have been treasures. Now that my husband and I will be in Venice in
November, we are grateful for your every word and thought! Thank you!!

Thank you! It makes me so happy to hear my work is useful. I love November in Venice. Look for cookies decorated for San Martino & foggy mornings.

Brilliant list Gillian 👏
🥰 Thank you Sinù

It’s one of Italy’s best things. More is more!
Lovely thoughts and images, Gillian. I haven't been in Venice in far too many years but your portrait of the place carries me back immediately.
Thank you Nancy ♥️
Hello - Lovely column as always. But we need photos of all the places you mention on the Lido!
I ran out of room here, but don’t worry I will be writing lots more about Lido! (& I have a few Lido images on my Instagram)
Magic!
✨✨✨
Gorgeous photos (and cake)!
Thank you! (That cake is indeed delicious)
Have you ever explained why you and Mark left Rome to retire in Venice? It’s fun for us though! Xoxoxo😉
I probably haven’t & that’s for a few reasons. The big reason being I don’t really have an answer! I’m working on it 😉
Venice can be overwhelming on several levels. Your lists make it much more manageable. Grazie
Venice certainly is a lot! I hope to see you up here one day soon.
I’d love it ~ really. I’ve been thinking about it!
