Gillian Knows Best guide to bookstores in Rome
๐My favorite places for glossy coffee table books + second hand paperbacks
I donโt read books nearly as much as I used to. Decades ago before the internet and Amazon on my annual visits home I would fill trunks (yes, entire trunks that Mark would haul across oceans for me) with enough novels to last the year. I loved the secret section in the basement of the Strand Bookstore with the shelf full of publishers proofs. When I lived in Washington, DC, I spent almost as much time at Kramerbooks as I did in my studio apartment up the street on Florida Avenue.
Even though now most of my I reading time budget goes to newsletters and long form articles in the New Yorker and NY Magazine1 I still love nothing more than to browse in a real bookstore.
A paid subscription gives you access to 10 (currently, I add a new one every month) Rome guides with a private map link to my favorite places for pizza, pasta, coffee and more. Is there a guide you would like me to create? Tell me in the comments.
